This Banana Avocado Smoothie does not taste like avocado! It is creamy, thick without yogurt, decadent, and a perfect healthy breakfast for kids.
👉 This banana avocado smoothie recipe has been a favorite since I first shared the recipe in 2021. It was updated with new photos in January 2025.
Adding avocado to a smoothie might sound strange, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the intensely chocolatey, rich, creamy and decadent taste. It’s almost like a yummy banana milkshake!

Reasons to love it
Texture: The combination of banana and avocado creates an ultra-thick, creamy consistency.
Kid-friendly: It is a great way to sneak in avocado to picky eaters.
Decadent: Cocoa powder adds a rich, decadent flavor, making it taste just like a chocolate milkshake.
Ingredients you’ll need
Scroll down to the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and amounts.
- Avocado – The key is using perfectly ripe avocados with no dark spots. Look for a smooth, light green center free of blemishes. Choosing a ripe avocado ensures your drink stays sweet and free of any bitterness.
- Banana – As with all ripe banana recipes, use a ripe speckled fruit for natural sweetness and flavor. Don’t like to bananas? Try this avocado smoothie without banana.
- Cocoa powder – As with all cocoa powder recipes, use dutch process cocoa powder for deep and rich chocolatey flavor.
- Milk – Regular whole milk will give a neutral taste as in all smoothies without yogurt. Use any plant based milks such as almond or oat milk instead to make it dairy free.
- Maple syrup – Just to make it sweet and delicious. Use honey instead.
🥑 Pro tip: Store firm avocados on the refrigerator shelf. While they ripen more slowly than those left at room temperature, the process is much more even, preventing any brown spots.
Substitutions/Variations
- Add a tablespoon of rolled oats to keep you full longer and satisfied. Did you know oatmeal can be blended to make a smoothie? Check out my oatmeal smoothie recipe.
- Flavorings such as ground cinnamon, vanilla extract will be spectacular.
- Blend half a scoop of your favorite protein powder.
- Add flax seeds, hemp seeds or chia seeds when blending to add healthy fats.

Does it taste bitter?
Bananas add thickness, creaminess, and natural sweetness, which helps balance out any slight bitterness from the avocado. I also add a touch of maple syrup for extra sweetness, making the banana avocado smoothie irresistibly delicious.
👩🍳 Pro tip: Use frozen banana and avocado chunks to make a thicker and creamier banana avocado smoothie.
Storage
- Fridge – Both bananas and avocados tend to oxidize quickly, so I recommend serving this smoothie fresh or refrigerating it for no more than one day to maintain its best flavor and texture.
- Freezer – Pour the blended drink into an ice cube tray, freeze overnight until rock hard. To thaw, place a few cubes in a mason jar and let thaw in refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours. Shake and drink.
Recipe tips
- Select a well ripened avocado without any dark spots.
- Use maple syrup to taste
- Use any high speed blender like Vitamix, Blendtec or NutriBullet.
